Maitai Bay

Me and kids, we came back to New Zealand beginning of November. Kiwi summer officially starts in December so already over the Christmas period we were off

for our first camping trip.

This time we went to Northland Region. We stayed on a (DOC) Maitai Bay campground located at Karikari Peninsula. As you can tell by the name - it was right at the bay. Yana's motion sickness defines how we usually spend summer in NZ. We tried going on a road trip once, when she was one year old. We ended up cleaning car way too many times, struggling on the way from one place to another... Ever since we decided to pick up one destination where we just go to and stick to it, for as long as we don't get board.

But don't worry, we don't get board so easily.

There was this one particularly cool day in Maitai Bay when we both : parents and kids, had a great fun! The thing is, we were entertained for two quite different reasons.

That day when went down to the beach, the bay was full of jellyfish...I mean they were everywhere!

Lying down next to each other on the sand, floating everywhere in the water...

For me it was absolutely gross, I was trying to walk zig zag, not to stump them, but no matter

how I tried, I could get the jelly feeling sometimes underneath my feet.

Our kids on the other end, were absolutely in love with these gelatinous creatures . I wouldn't say they found them cute, but had no problem playing with them. Of course it was also lucky that these jellies did not seam to sting at all, otherwise I probably wouldn't let them play so much. But Yana especially felt like little explorer, was trying to pick them, examine, dig them with fingers, organize, collect in bucket full of water, bring back to sea and whatever not.

So why did we, the adults ended up liking that day so much? BECAUSE THE DOLPHINS CAME TO THE BAY!!!!

Yeah! Four dolphins came to bay and stayed for like an hour just to play around with people.

They were coming really close to the beach, to the real shallow water. Because we had with us our

Stand Up Paddle board we had a chance, each one of us, to go there and float around with dolphins. Just try to imagine that feeling when you are paddling to the nearest spot where you last saw them jumping out of water, not sure where exactly they could be now...? And all of a sudden SPLASH, you see them jumping out, right next to you. It was wonderful! Obviously it is the best feeling ever, when you know you were the nearest person they jumped out at ( did happened quite few times, so we were extremely happy ).

And now the weirdest thing is that our kids DID NOT CARE. They were so focused on their

jellies that they could actually play with, couldn't really understand why we tell them stop doing that and start watching some jumping dolphins on the horizon.....
