Last year we were a bit bummed that we did not get a chance to go on our typical winter escape kind of adventure....
Especially since we moved to even colder city than Auckland...so we were actually looking forward to skip some of those low temperature days. Instead we ended up insulating our house, to make those low temperatures more livable while at home : ) On a bad summer day we still have only 13'C here in Dunedin, so going away for a month or so ,is not going to fix it ( although this is pretty much how we were dealing with winter back in Auckland - investing a bit in heating and the other bit in traveling away and by the time we were coming back the spring was in the air )
So Boohoo, once in 7 years we were unable to go for the exotic adventure but luckily we were in a beautiful corner of the world so we did not feel stuck at all. Since we were still very new to the South Island ,we ended up going for multiple mini trips. From Spring 2016 to Spring 2017 we went to :
- run around green Catlins
- enjoy the summer camping ( with SUP board and bikes ) around lake Tekapo and lake Pukaki
- drink some wine around Queenstown
- Cycle on Otago Rail Trail
- Go on some nice beach walks around Dunedin
- Visit Wanaka and try some cross country skiing in Snow Farm.
When I was putting together this " One year in South Island" movie I was truly amazed how NZ is beautiful. Sounds a bit like a slogan or a cheap cliche...but since we live here everyday we got a bit spoiled and start taking the surrounding us nature and dramatic views almost for granted. It is healthy to some times step back and take a look at some things with a different perspective. The yearly perspective was great, made me and Vathsan feel very thankful.
