Samoa grow it's own cocoa.
While our last year travel we had Koko Samoa on multiple ocasions. Either we would start our day with Koko Alaisa which is more like breakfast soup made of cocoa, coconut milk and rice. Either we will join locals, in the afternoon, for a cup or two of their national drink.
Beofre our flight back to New Zealand we went to local market and bought few cups of Koko to bring back home. We were trying not to drink it over the summer, so we can enjoy it during cold days...

You usually buy koko Samoa in a plastic cup. It's a hard ( really hard ) block of cocaa full of nibs. If you don't mind grinds, you can basically just chop off a big piece of Koko needed, and put it straigth in a pot.
If you are not a big fan of grinds, use sharp knife or grater to granulize the Koko.
To make two cups of Koko you need:
- 2 cups of water ( 500 ml )
- 4 tablespoons of Koko
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- sip of milk ( optional )
Bring water to boil, add Koko to it. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and sweaten with sugar. Add milk if you wish.

Remember to drink it hot! If you let it to cool down, the fat from koko will solidify!
Probably if you google a bit, you may be able to buy Koko Samoa on -line and get it shipped wherver you are. Buy if you are not that motivated, and living in New Zealand, you can just pop to nearest shop and pick up this chocolate, made of Samoan Cocoa,
to at least get a flavour of it.
