Tomek , a Polish friend of mine, was recently telling me a story about our mutual friend, who after becoming a father had to borrow his colleague's bigger car so he could take his family to the batch, for his weekly holidays - But why did you do that? - Tomek asked. - What do you mean? You don't know how much stuff there is when it comes to babies??? So that is correct. Babies do require some extra stuff. When we were going to cycle across Samoa we had to pack light. Mostly because we didn't really want to cycle with kids and heavy panniers. Also because that time when we were flying, we were already checkin-in two bikes and a bike seat, so wanted to fit all our panniers in to one " russian bag" which couldn't exceed 20 kg anyway. During that trip, one lazy afternoon, I just pulled out from our bags
the ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE when we travel with babies stuff, took a picture of it, so now I can share this special list with you! By the way, the picture is totally missing an umbrella! We always travel with one, we just lost it by the time I was taking that pic. And if you are using a pacifier, than I recommend adding a dummy leash to that list!

so hey - ho, here we go: First is the group of items that are necessary to feed the baby: 1. Bottle
2. Formula ( baby's powder milk )
3. Plastic cup ( we use it to mash in it banana, papaya, rice etc)
4. Plastic spoon
5. Bottle-brush
6. Thermos, probably not so necessary in tropics, but we always prefer to have it,
so we can keep in it warm water or cold
12. Torch. It's multipurpose but we mostly were using it for night feeds
Second is the group of items for what happens after baby ate, or drunk...:
9. Diapers
10. Scented bags for stinky diapers
11. Wet wipes
Third is the group of " protection":
7. Insect repellent special ,nice and mild for young kids.
8. Sunscreen for babies
+ Umbrella ( to protect you from sun or rain )
+ sunhat, which I forgot to put on that picture
16. Cloth nappy, was multipurpose but we used it for sun protection as well
Fourth and last is the group of things we need for good quality sleep:
13. Hammock. It packs up to a very small bag, so we would always take it for a travel, and
use it from time to time as a nap solution.
14. Mosquito net. For an undisturbed night time sleepy on the bed.
15. Blanket. For an awake baby just to sit and play on.
For a baby who is already asleep in the carrier we would use the blanket so we could detach her from our back, and let her continue her nap on it.
17. Baby carrier. Obviously to carry a baby, but definitely also a very good " sleeping tool"
In NZ they say, that the baby should eat lots of iron. So we were always packing some extra iron fortified baby rice, and equivalent of 3 jars of baby meal with meat per week.
Since I was never sure about the price and quality of diapers we will get during our travels, I would try to take like 30 nappies from NZ, and would use them mostly for important days such as taking a flight or majority of the nights. Mostly to just avoid the leaks and red bum. We would also let our kids hang out without the diapers quite often anyways.
So that would be our list. Not everybody have to travel as much light as we did, I guess, it was just to show you, that a baby at the end of the day, as always mostly needs a good feed and a good sleep, and with some extra care, sun and mosquito protection is good to go and travel the world!
